1:1 laptop learning is one of the latest initiatives in the move for governmental programs, with partnership of private firms, to improve education. This “improvement” is a result of kids suddenly having access to technology and therefore due to this, we both herald the advent of “21st century” schooling, and wonderful grades. What we fail to heed are basic statistics; which are more than clear that there are averages in the population, with outliers at both ends of the spectrum. What this means is that, while 1:1 learning is a great program to introduce technology, the heralding of it as the grand solution to the academic problems in our nation is an entirely different issue.
I’m not dilberately attempting to sound like a pessimist on this issue, technology is grand, but as long as we are trying to cram all students through a one-size-fits-all educational system, we will continue to get the traditional bell-curve of academic success. Until we allow the users of the system (students & parents) to dictate the learning and processes that are most suited to the consumer’s learning, i.e. individualized learning, we will never free learners to discover what they are best at, what they delight at, and how to succeed doing both. Not to mention the eye problems that might develop from laptops with “pre-loaded… textbook information and other relevant software, [that replaces] textbooks for the 922 students” [in Lorain City, OH]. While I generally delight with any progress made by technology, I’m not convinced that 1:1 is a well-thought-out solution just yet.
