Where exactly does the responsibility lie for educating our future?
Presently it appears as if the federal government holds that responsibility. Let’s face it, there is a Department of Education (granted it has no authority in the constitution) and under the current administration billions of dollars in funds are being battled over in congress at this very time. So it very much appears as if responsibility sits on the government. Yet, at the exact same time those in power are sending a mixed signal. Many states for instance allow parents to choose the school their child attends. Furthermore, what about home-schoolers; that is most definitely a parental responsibility.
So I once again ask the question: Who should be responsible for education? What if I were to throw in the word quality “…responsible for the quality of education;” does that change anything? Well in fact, it does. See, the government does not guarantee the quality; they try, by adding in various state regulations. But that doesn’t really help at all. In fact, regulations causes the drop out rate to rise. So obviously, the federal government cannot be responsible for the quality of our education. Therefore, the answer can only be the parents. This does not mean that all students should be homes-chooled, by no means. What it does mean is that parents need to take an active role in their child’s education. And if the government wants to get involved in the lives of the everyday average American, the best thing it can do is provide legislation which helps parents provide the best education possible, not regulate it under the red taped good intentions of bureaucracy.
