Free Lectures Online: Effective Education?

Academic Earth “A for-profit web site bases its business model on mining the internet for and then posting publicly available lectures from prestigious universities–and officials from at least one campus are reviewing the arrangement and reserving judgment.”

Not sure how many ways this idea is “funny”, but let me try listing a few. From the article, it states that the company is a “for-profit” business. This would mean while a University has posted content to be used for free, this company is attempting to make a profit off of that content. Why wouldn’t a student just go to the Univ. site after searching the web and get the content for free? Oh wait, because this site attempts to consolidate the “learning”.

Second, it is well known in educational methdology & psychology that lectures are the most INEFFECTIVE method for learning and the transference and mastery of knowledge.  Learning occurs when a variety of methods are combined; talking, writing, discussing, manipulating, experimenting, reading, etc… good old “Bloom’s Taxonomy.”  Lectures not only focus on only one path towards knowledge, but they monopolize that one method until it makes the “learning” of content nearly ineffective.

Third, the leaders of Academic Earth are for-profit and their plan is that “videos would not be monetized unless university officials agreed to incorporate advertisements with the lectures.”  Unfortunately, the content is FREE, and advertising in an intrusive method, especially in a way that interrupts an already ineffective method for learning, just makes what was already ineffective, truely useless.

In summation, is Academic Earth a good idea? No.  Great corporate name, but not only is their entire philosophy of “education” faulty, but the idea of capitalizing on something the makers of the content consider a charitable activity is also disgusting.  Last, not only is the entire premise built on a shaky foundation, but the content on the site is very minimal.

Looks quite Facebook-centered to me. Once you do not possess a Facebook Account, there’s practically nothing extremely to determine on that internet site. Also, after three days, you have to pay-up to stay a premium member. Not actually TPB design, as soon as you ask me.
